Comments: There were many motivating factors that led to this marathon:
- At Christmas 2004 I was having some problems buttoning the top button of my jeans.
- Jenny gave me a Garmin Forerunner 201 for Christmas. This is a GPS training watch that tracks your distance, pace, etc. The chart below was generated from the data collected by the watch.
- My brother and sister-in-law Kevin and Melissa had been running marathons.

Comments: My brother Kevin and I trained together for the Moab marathon. He was living in UT and I was in MA. We ran together for the first 20 miles at 9:00 minute miles. I then crashed pretty hard and he went on to beat me by 10 minutes. I am not sure if it was the altitude or the butterfly flapping its wings in China, but I did not feel good from the beginning of this race. I felt like I did not live up to my 5 months of training, so that is why I ran my next marathon one month later.

Comments: I trained with a group of friends from MIT on this one (shown in the picture: Jason Walther, Ryan Hammond, Adam Smith, and Lane Brooks). We did a 12 week training course, and I liked that a lot better than the previous sessions. This was overall a great experience and I am very happy with my time. Breaking the 4 hour barrier makes me feel like a real runner. This was my first time training with others, and it was overall a positive experience.
Utah Valley Marathon 2010
Date: June 12, 2010
Official Time: 03:54:45
Location:Provo, UT
Official Website: http://utahvalleymarathon.com
Comments: This was a great race for me. I woke up with intestinal issues and ended up stopping twice along the way to go to the bathroom. I intentionally paced myself slow at the beginning and amazingly I never really hit the wall but felt strong all the way through. This is a very fast course and the last 6 miles are about as perfect as a marathon can be given the steady slight downward slope. Given the three years since my last marathon, this was somewhat of a recovery run for me as I had a two year break from running. Jenny also ran this and kicked my butt with a 03:24:31, which is a Boston Qualifying time.

Top of Utah 2010
Date: September 18, 2010
Official Time: 03:41:01
Location:Logan, UT
Comments: This was a PR for me. The course starts 14 miles up a canyon near Logan. The first half is a nice downhill run. I appearantly took the first half too fast, though. My split at 13.1 was 01:41:36, which put me on pace for a 03:22:00 finish. The second half is very flat. I maintained a reasonable pace until around mile 20 where things went bad. The last 6 miles were extrememly painful for me. I pushed it harder than I ever had just to do 10 to 12 minute miles. I think the downhill marathons are spoiling me.

Mesquite Marathon 2010
Date: November 2010
Official Time: 03:55:33
Location:Mesquite, NV
Comments: I signed up for this marathon last minute to try because it is a downhill course and I wanted to get a better marathon time for 2010. Everything was looking good until mile 6 when a strong head wind came up. The head wind continued for the remaining 20 miles and thwarted my goal. The head wind was brutal. In fact, we formed in-promptu drafting lines on the course with fellow runners where we would rotate through leading the pack.

Salt Lake City Marathon 2011
Date: April 16, 2011
Official Time: 03:34:53 (08:12 min/mile pace)
Location:Salt Lake City, UT
Comments: Another PR for me. This was a good race for me. My goal was to be disciplined with my heart rate and not go out too fast. This goal somewhat worked out for me. I was very careful at the begining to keep my heart rate below 150. By mile 20 it was up to 155 and I felt like I was out of gas. I got some bananas and oranges at some aid stations and while I never really felt like I had a second wind, I was able to push my heart rate up to 165 to finish out the last 6 miles. Even with that high heart rate I was going quite slow. My first half marathon split was 8:01 min/mile pace and my second half marathon was 8:24 min/mile. I slowed considerably in the second half, so slowing down is still something to work on.
